Social Security Is Changing: What You NEED to Know

If you're applying for you may have heard that things are changing. A lot of these updates are confusing, frustrating, and honestly, just plain stressful. But don’t worry, I’m breaking it all down for you in plain English, no legal dictionary needed.

At 2 Sisters In Law, we help everyday people get the disability benefits they deserve. And right now, more than ever, it’s important to know how these changes might affect you (or someone you care about).

So let’s get into it.

1. It’s Taking WAY Longer to Get Approved

We’re seeing huge delays right now.

  • Some people are waiting 6 to 12 months (or more) just to get a decision.

  • If you need a hearing, it could take over a year.

What this means for you:Start the process early. Don’t wait until your situation gets worse. The sooner you file, the sooner we can start helping you get benefits, and backpay.

2. Proving Your Identity Is Harder Than Before

Social Security recently updated how people apply for disability. They’re now asking folks to use a digital ID system (called ID.me or Login.gov). And if that doesn’t work? You might have to go into a Social Security office in person. No fun, especially if you have health issues, no transportation, or live far away.

Tip: Get your documents ready now—like your photo ID, birth certificate, and work history. If you’re working with us, we’ll walk you through it.

3. Fewer Staff at SSA Means Longer Waits for Help

SSA (Social Security Administration) has cut thousands of jobs and even closed some offices. That means:

  • Longer phone hold times

  • Fewer appointments

  • Slower paperwork

Don’t give up! Stay on top of your case. If you’re working with an attorney (like us), we help keep your claim from falling through the cracks.

4. Good News: Faster Decisions for Serious Conditions

Here’s a bright spot: SSA has added more illnesses to their Compassionate Allowances list.

This means that if you have a very serious diagnosis—like certain cancers, brain disorders, or rare conditions—you could get approved much faster.

Check if your condition is on the list. And if you’re not sure? We can help you find out.

5. Retired Workers May Get More Money (But Not Everyone)

A new law removed two unfair rules called WEP and GPO. These used to reduce benefits for teachers, firefighters, and other public workers.

Now, many of those folks are getting bigger Social Security checks.

Important: This change mostly affects retired workers—not people applying for disability. But it’s still good news!

6. What YOU Can Do Right Now

Here’s a quick checklist to help you stay ahead of the chaos:

  1. Apply early. Don’t wait until you’re desperate.

  2. Get your paperwork ready. ID, medical records, work history.

  3. Talk to someone who knows the system. Hi, that’s us!

  4. Follow up often. Your claim won’t move itself.

  5. Ask questions. You deserve to understand what’s going on.

Need Help? You’re Not Alone.

We fight for people like you who deserve help but get caught up in the system. If all of this sounds overwhelming, that’s because it is. But you don’t have to do it alone.
