Meet Kya!

One question I have been asked throughout my career is if I knew I was going to be a lawyer. The answer to that is no. In fact I didn't decide to even go to law school until my senior year in college. People seemed surprised by that answer, especially, if they didn't know before, that the firm is comprised of my Dad, who started the firm, and my sister. Growing up, seeing our Dad working long hours, with, sometimes, no reprieve from his work, during times he should have been resting gave me no desire to go down that path. My alternative choice? Medicine. Smh…I know. In an effort to do something the exact opposite of law, I began my undergrad journey as a pre- med biology major. I was all for it until that first class, Chemistry 101, kicked my butt. In most major universities a crazy amount of students begin their journeys into pre-med. The university, knows this, and in order to maintain the top from the tippy top, they have these courses which determine if you can move on. Well, the spring semester killed me, but, being the persistent person that I am, I took the same class the summer semester, determined to ace it. I have always relied on God to set my paths, even though it may not be what I wanted for myself at the time. The summer I tried to get through this tough class, and solidify my pre med status, was the same summer one of my favorite Aunts died of cancer. I left immediately to be with my family. I also knew there was no way I would be able to make up that class. I had a moment where I felt the shift of following God's path for my life. No, law still was not the direction I decided to take, but I enjoyed some of my electives which included Economics and African-American studies. I decided then that I enjoyed being in the business world and culture. I set my sites on sports and entertainment. The summer and fall of my senior year at UNC, I had the opportunity to work with both the Hornets and the Panthers. While working with the Hornets, I met the most amazing person, Felicia Hall (Allen). Ms. Hall had just been hired as VP of the WNBA Charlotte Sting. She was a former basketball player herself, had worked for Nike, was a beautiful black woman, and yes, SHE was an attorney. In fact, the majority of the front office, at the time, were attorneys. When I started working for the Panthers the same year, the same was true for their front office. It was THEN I decided that I would go to law school. I applied to law school with the intention that I would be working in the sports and entertainment field. While it didn't look like what I thought it would, God has blessed me to do just that…and work with two of my favorite people as well.
